A Note on the Titanic Playbill

The crew of the Titanic included two typesetters who produced all printed material needed on the ship. They had one or two letterpresses on board, most likely located in a room on the port side of E-Deck. Their largest daily project was the printing of the menus. They had to produce separate menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for each of the first, second, and third class dining rooms.

The printer steward was Abraham Mishellamy (age 52), originally from Lebanon. Ernest Corben (age 27), an Englishman, was the assistant printer steward. Both men had served on the Olympic prior to joining the Titanic. The White Star line preferred clean, modern typefaces. Among those in use on the Titanic were Akzidenz Grotesk and Westminster.

Both Mishellamy and Corben were lost when the Titanic went down. As a tribute to them, the playbill for Titanic: The Musical was set in Akzidenz Grotesk typeface, which they used for printing the ship’s menus.
